A FAITHFUL DOG

A Faithful Dog Will Play With You, And Laugh With You Or Cry

He'll Gladly Starve To Stay With You, Nor Ever Reason Why,

And When You're Feeling Out Of Sorts, Somehow He'll Understand

He'll Watch You With His Shining Eyes, And Try To Lick Your Hand.

His Blind Implicit Faith In You, Is Matched By His Great Love-

The Kind That All Of Us Should Have, In The Master Up Above.

When Everything Is Said And Done, I Guess This Isn't Odd

For When You Spell "Dog" Backwards, You Get The Name Of God.

A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

A Dog's Best Friend

O Lord, don't let me once forget

How I love my trusty pet

Help me learn to disregard

canine craters in my yard

Show me how to be a buddy

even when my sofa's muddy,

Don't allow my pooch to munch

postal carriers for lunch,

Shield my neighbor's cat from view,

guide my steps around the doo,

Train me not to curse and scowl,

when it's puppy's night to howl,

Grant I shan't awake in fear

with a cold nose in my ear,

Give me patience without end-

Help me be; A DOG'S BEST FRIEND.

ALONE AGAIN

I wish someone could tell me

What it is that I've done wrong,

Why I have to stay chained up

And left alone so long.

They seemed so glad to have me

When I came here as a pup.

There were so many things we'd do

While I was growing up.

They couldn't wait to train me

As companion and as friend.

They told me they would never fear

Being left alone again.

The children said they'd feed me,

Said they'd brush me every day,

They'd play with me and walk me,

If only I could stay.

But now the family hasn't time.

They often say I shed.

They wont allow me in the house,

Not even to be fed.

The children never walk me.

They always say, "Not Now!"

I wish that I could please them.

Won't someone tell me how?

All I have is love, you see,

I wish they would explain,

Why they said they wanted me

Then left me on a chain.

Don't Grieve Too Long

Don't grieve too long, for now I'm free.

I've followed the path God has set for me.

I ran to Him when I heard His Call.

I swished my tail and left it all.

I could not stay another day,

To bark, to love, to romp or play.

Games left unplanned must stay that way.

I found such peace, it made my day.

My parting has left you with a void.

Please fill it with remembered joy,

A friendship shared, your laugh, a kiss.

Oh yes, these things I too shall miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow.

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life has been full, you've given so much,

Your time, your love and gentle touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief.

Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your head and share with me,

God wanted me, He set me free!

 I ONLY WANTED YOU

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

Only A Dog

Do you remember thinking it was time that the kids learned some
responsibility and scanning the newspaper ads for a cheap dog for sale? Do you remember bringing home this little ball of shivering fur and
putting her out in the yard on a chain that was too heavy on a night
that was too cold?

Of course you don't remember this.
After all, she is only a dog.

Do you remember this baby crying because she was afraid and alone?
Do you remember screaming at her to be quiet and finally going out there to kick her to drive home the lesson?

Of course you don't remember this.
After all, she is only a dog.

Do you remember the many times you noticed her water bowl was
empty and her food bowl was covered with mold and thinking that it was
the kids' job to take care of her?
Do you remember seeing that her coat
was dull and lifeless and, in many places, chewed away down to the skin
because of the parasites no one took the time to rid her of?

Of course you don't remember this. After all, she is only a dog.

Do you remember her first heat and the neighbor's male visiting
her night after night? Do you remember thinking that letting her have the puppies would be a good experience for the kids? Do you remember that every one of those pups died because their mother was no more than a puppy herself?

Of course you don't remember this.
After all, she is only a dog.

I thought you might be interested in how this girl is doing today. You see, once she found a home that gave her love, attention and proper care, she blossomed into a beautiful, loyal companion.

To these people, she is much more than only a dog.

She became a therapy dog and now goes to nursing homes and
hospices where she brightens the lives of the infirm and dying. To some
of these people, she has given hope. To others, she's given them a
reason to keep living. To even others, she's given them the will to die
peacefully, with a smile on their lips.

To these people, she is much more than only a dog.

Just last week, she helped find a little boy that was lost in the woods. She spent a long, cold winter's night, lying over him to keep him warm and risked her own life to protect his.

To this little boy and his family, she is much more than only a dog.

Why did that filthy, flea ridden animal chained in your backyard suddenly
become so important to so many?

Because she never gave up her
trust in people and she never once thought,

"After all, he is only a human."

 Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When
an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
they go to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all
of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is
plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.
All the animals who have been ill and old are restored
to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole
and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days
and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for
one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who
had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day
comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His
bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly
he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his
legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and
when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together
in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain
upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you
look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from
your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

THE STRAY

Monday she said that a crumb would do.

Tuesday she asked me to make it two.

Wednesday she said she'd prefer to have fish And not on a paper - she'd rather have a dish!

On Thursday she said it was cold out there So what about letting her sleep on a chair.

By Friday she'd made it perfectly clear
That lucky old her was going to live HERE

On Saturday night she took half my bed And woke me up early to get herself fed

Today we'll have chicken because it is Sunday

I wonder what she'd enjoy eating on Monday

To My Best Friend

I know that it must be different,
now that I am no longer here.
I realize how much I was loved
and how all of you did care.

I know it will be hard at first
when you look around for me.
Expecting to find me in my bed
or beside my favorite tree.

Someday you will begin to see,
although it'll take some time,
the happy times you shared with me,
the memories are yours and mine.

I'll remember you, my family
and how much you meant to me,
So please don't grieve and don't be sad, it was just my time to leave.

"He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.) When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another person. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever - in case I need him. And I expect I will - as I always have. He is just my dog." - Gene Hill

DOGS LIVE HERE

If you don't want to be greeted with paws and swinging tails

don't come inside because dogs live here.

If you don't like the feel of a cold nose or a wet tongue,

don't come inside because dogs live here.

If you don't want to step over many scattered toys,

don't come inside because dogs live here.

If you think that a home ought to smell of perfume,

don't come inside because dogs live here.

If you don't mind all of this,

you will be instantly loved when you come inside,

because dogs live here.

I Stood Beside Your Bed Last Night

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear.
"Its me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here"
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea.
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore.
I want to take your parcels, I wished I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for the key,
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me".
You looked so very tired and then you sank into a chair,
I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.
Its possible for me to be so near you everyday,
to say to you with certainty "I never went away".
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew
That in the stillness of that evening I was very close to you.
The day is over.... I smile and watch you yawning
and say, " Good Night, Sweet Dreams, God Bless,
I'll see you in the morning".
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide
I'll rush to greet you and well stand together side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there's much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out; then come home and be with me.

DON'T CRY MAMA

Don't cry Mama, I'm doing fine

I'm in Heaven now with wings that shine

It makes me sad to see you cry

But I have beautiful flowers up here in the sky

God gave me all I could ever dream

It's a place more beautiful than you've ever seen

While there on earth, I saw your smile

Bringing me peace, If just for a little while

Now as I live in eternal bliss

Mommy, just know, I love your kiss

I loved the time you devoted to me

And my only want now, is your sweet smile to see

DOG

When God had made the earth and sky,

The flowers and the trees.

He then made all the animals,

The fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last He'd finished,

Not one was quite the same.

He said, "I'll walk this world of mine,

And give each one a name."

And so He traveled far and wide

And everywhere He went,

A little creature followed Him

Until its strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth

And in the sky and sea,

The little creature said, "Dear Lord,

There's not one left for me."

Kindly the Father said to him,

"I've left you to the end.

I've turned my own name back to front

And called you dog, my friend."

IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,

Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.

For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.

You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.

Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.

Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.

We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

IN OUR HEARTS

We thought of you with love today.

But that is nothing new.

We thought about you yesterday.

And days before that too.

We think of you in silence.

We often speak your name.

Now all we have is memories.

And your picture in a frame.

Your memory is our keepsake.

With which we’ll never part.

God has you in his keeping.

We have you in our heart

NO CHARGE FOR LOVE

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell.
He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups.
And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard.

As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls.
He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

"Mister," he said,
"I want to buy one of your puppies."
"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat of the back of his neck,
"These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine
cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer, and with that he let out a whistle. Here, Dolly!" he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran
Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.

As the dogs made their way to the
fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.

Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller.

Down the ramp it slid. Then in a
somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up....

"I want that one,"
the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy.

He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers.

In doing so he revealed a
steel brace running down both sides
of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer,
he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands. " With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup.

Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy.

"No charge," answered the farmer,

"There's no charge for love."

Rainbow Bridge, Sequel

Oh, when we get to Heaven
We hope that we will find

The Souls that once we loved,
Who left us all behind.

Some left us at the right time,
They left this world in peace.

Others left too sudden,
Without the chance to say Good-bye.

They were gone before we had the chance to even cry.

There's a special place for grownups,
A special place for kids;

Me, I'll be on the other side,

The side called Rainbow Bridge.
Across the dark green meadow,

A top the hills I'll run.
Where the colors from the Rainbow,

Glitter from the sun.

And there I'll find my sweetheart running fast toward me.

In my arms where he belongs

FOR ALL ETERNITY

Treasured Friend

I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
Her gentle head upon my knee
And share her silent thoughts with me...

She'll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more her favorite ball
A voice far greater than my own
Has called her to His golden throne.

Although my eyes are filled with tears, I thank Him for the happy years He let her spend down here with me

And for her love and loyalty.
When it is time for me to go
And join her there, this much I know...

I shall not fear the transient dark
For she will greet me with her bark.
